overview Dr. Gerena is Assistant Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the School of Pharmacy, and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the School of Medicine, University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus. Dr. Gerena received his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Puerto Rico and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in immunology and molecular biology in the Department of Microbiology of the School of Medicine at the University of Puerto Rico. He gained research experience in flow cytometry and molecular biology at CUNY Hunter College, New York and Los Alamos National Laboratories, New Mexico. Research efforts focus on the role of the soluble insulin receptor and insulin signaling pathways in the development and progression of insulin resistance and cognitive impairment in HIV-seropositive patients using combined antiretroviral treatment (cART).
